9 Questions About Waxing You’re Too Embarrassed To Ask

Waxing Hair Removal Service in Victoria

When you get a client sitting across from you asking a question about waxing, your ears are naturally going to perk up. Maybe it’s the chemistry. Perhaps it’s the pent-up curiosity. But we’ve heard every waxing question under the sun, and for whatever reason, you’re sure this one will be different. They’ll ask intelligently, or they’ll ask in a way that makes you wonder, “Is this their first time talking?” Let’s just say these questions are slightly amusing — but you should have an answer ready because they always pop up out of nowhere!

Here they go:

  1. Can I wax my face?

Yes, but you need to be 18 or over and have a patch test first. We also advise against waxing your eyebrows because they are very delicate and sensitive to that kind of treatment.

  1. Will it hurt?

It depends on the area being treated and how sensitive you are to pain; however, most people find it not as painful as expected! It may feel like a slight sting or pinch when the hair is pulled out, but we promise it won’t hurt too much once it’s done! If you have a low pain threshold, ask us about numbing creams before your appointment to relax knowing that you won’t feel anything at all!

We use a special wax designed to be gentle on your skin. We also have different levels of hot wax to choose from, so you can find one that will work best for you. The more sensitive areas of your body may require more attention, but our experienced estheticians will make sure it’s as comfortable as possible.

  1. Can I shave before my appointment?

No! Don’t shave for 1-2 weeks before your appointment. The wax needs to grip the hair to pull it out properly, so you’ll need to let the hair grow to about 6-8mm, or about the length of a grain of rice.

  1. Can I shower after my wax treatment?

We recommend waiting 24 hours before showering after your wax treatment, but it really depends on the type of treatment you received and how sensitive your skin is. If you need to shower sooner than that, please let us know, and we will make arrangements with your technician.

  1. How soon should I come back in for another visit?

We recommend coming back in 6 weeks for another visit if you had a full leg or bikini wax or 3-4 weeks if it was just maintenance (upper lip, brows or chin). You can come back sooner if needed but keep in mind that there is an additional charge for this service due to the cost of materials used, such as paper towels & hot wax remover pads.

  1. Can I get my eyebrows done if my skin breaks out easily?

Absolutely! Our estheticians will take extra care around any breakouts or irritated areas so that there’s no irritation during or after your service. If you have particularly sensitive skin, we recommend doing a patch test first by applying a small amount of hot wax onto the inside of your wrist (where there aren’t many oils) and letting it cool down before checking for redness or irritation.

  1. Does it hurt more or less than laser hair treatment?

Both laser hair removal and waxing are essentially the same things; they’re both forms of epilation and cause skin irritation when done on a large scale. However, there are some differences in the overall process of each method:

  • Laser treatments are quicker but more expensive, whereas waxing is cheaper but takes longer;
  • Laser treatments provide permanent results, whereas waxing can only be performed once every 4-6 weeks;
  • For some people who find one method more tolerable than another, this could decide which method they choose for their own personal reasons.
  1. Can I use lotion on my skin before getting waxed?

No, you cannot use any lotion on the area where you will be getting the wax. This includes body lotion, makeup remover, oil or any other product that contains oil or moisture. If you do not want to go without lotion completely, we recommend purchasing some baby powder at your local drug store and using this instead of your regular body lotion or moisturizer.

  1. Can I shave down there before getting a Brazilian?

No! Any shaving will cause more discomfort for you during your Brazilian waxing session because it will make the hair more difficult for us to remove correctly (this also applies if you are planning on getting a Hollywood wax). Shaving makes it so much harder for us to get an even strip of hair from top to bottom and leaves behind more skin surface area for bacteria and ingrown hairs, resulting in infections/rashes/blisters/irritations, etc. The length is needed so the wax can grip the hair.

Waxing questions … they’re endless. And since we’ve been answering them since 2019, we’ve had a lot of time to think about ’em (and write them down). The most common waxing questions all revolve around hair removal and what it will or won’t do for your body. We thought it was about time that we shared the answers with you.

Whether you are looking for leg waxing, Brazilian waxing, eyebrow waxing or bikini waxing, there’s no denying it – getting waxed can be a little scary. I mean, stripping down to your birthday suit and exposing every little detail of you to someone wielding a hot poker isn’t exactly anybody’s definition of ‘fun’. But when you look back at the seemingly painful experience, you tell yourself it was worth it.
